Weekend routines work wonders on the human frame, but they don’t come cheap. The object is to spoil yourself rotten and emerge cleansed, relaxed, uplifted, and beautiful. All you need is a bathrobe, exercise clothes, some beauty products, and tempting diet food. Tell the family you’re out of action. Then go ahead and pamper yourself.
Diet food should be delicious and between 900 and 1000 calories per day.
- half small cantaloupe or honeydew, with lemon juice
- 2 small crispbread biscuits with sliced tomato
- black tea or coffee
Change into shorts for morning exercises. If you are not in shape don’t overdo it. Stop when you feel tired.
Most people who start exercising do so for a specific reason – mainly to lose weight, but also to look and feel better. It is entirely up to the individual which form of exercise they adopt. As there are so many varieties they should choose one to suit their own lifestyle.
Whatever form is chosen, it should be a fun activity and be designed to strengthen muscles, increase joint mobility, improve posture, and increase endurance.
By exercising, we strengthen our muscle structure by contraction of the muscles so that we can support our skeletal structure and protect our spines. We also increase our flexibility by stretching and by making our joints work through a full range of movements.
Aerobic exercise, which promotes cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs) and endurance is the final part of an exercise program. Jogging, walking briskly, swimming, dancing and skipping are examples of aerobic exercise.
Needless to say, we should start slowly, with caution, and with our doctor’s approval. We should all work at our own pace, and compete with no-one – only ourselves.
Exercise will not change your skeleton or body type. You must recognize your body type, be realistic in what you hope to achieve, and then work to get your body in its own best possible shape.
Exercise promotes good circulation, builds up the efficiency of the heart and lungs, controls the appetite, reduces tension, and keeps the muscles and joints in good working order.
It also generates energy which helps you to sail through the day.
Exercise increases the body’s metabolism while you are actually exercising and also for 2 to 3 hours afterward, so you are continuing to burn fat even when you stop working.
You will probably find that you lose inches before you start losing weight, this may mean a slight increase in weight, taking into account that muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less space.
3. Tidying Up
Tune to FM radio or put on your favorite record, spray the air with a delicate scent. Shave legs and underarms. Shape eyebrows. Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet up. Lean back and brush hair gently. Massage a creamy conditioner through the hair. Skip the conditioner if your hair is oily but massage the scalp just the same. Wrap head in a bath towel.
Wring out a soft cloth in warm water, apply to the face and leave until cool. Repeat five times. Massage face and neck with cleansing lotion. Begin at the base of the neck and massage upward to chin with the back of the hand, first left then right.
Next, stroke from under the chin to the cheeks, then across the cheeks, then down the nose. Massage forehead from brow to the hairline with tips of fingers. With index finger very gently massage under eyes from the outside to the inside; lids from inside to outside.
Tissue off cleansing lotion and rinse face with cool water. Pat face with a cotton ball soaked in astringent (for oily skin) or refresher (for normal to dry skin) to close pores. Apply moisturizer to face and throat.
Run a deep warm relaxing bath and add scented bath oil. Cover your eyes with cotton pads soaked in witch hazel and slip down into the warm water until it covers your shoulders. Lean back and relax for 20 minutes.
The steamy warmth will help the moisturizing cream penetrate your face. Towel the body dry, put on a bathrobe, and relax with black tea or coffee. A slice of lemon and sugar substitute can be added.
There’s an old saying that a bath does as much for beauty as 4 hours of sleep. This means a bath in your own bathroom, taken with the basic ingredients – water, soap, and the biggest towel you possess.
Bath salts, one of the many fragrant oils, a brush or loofah for back scrubbing, cologne, body lotion, or cold water splashing for the final, brisk cool-off make even a 10-minute bath a luxury.
Add enough time to enjoy the whole thing – say 20 minutes in all – and your daily relaxing bath becomes a beauty treatment second to none. Of course, baths can do much more for you and make you feel rested and look pretty. It’s all in the way you take them.
To rouse yourself when you feel lazy or would like to sleep another hour, the trick is to bathe in water distinctly warmer or colder than your body. Don’t dawdle; wash quickly and thoroughly, scrub your back (and your feet) with a brush, rub dry vigorously, and you’ll feel eager to go.
Did you know that the way to feel warm and cozy after a bath is to take a cool shower? Or if you’re not equal to that, take a warm bath followed by a cool rinse.
Have you ever been told to take a bath when you’re stiff and aching from unaccustomed exercise? It’s good advice. Take a long, quite warm bath and soak for at least 10 minutes, turning on the hot water now and then to keep up the temperature.
Towel briskly, massage your body with soothing lotion or cologne, and you’ll begin to feel better right away.
6. Face Time
Masks tone and revive tired skin. Choose one to suit your skin type. Apply according to package directions. Lie down in a dim room with feet up. Cover the eyes with cotton pads soaked in witch hazel and rest for 20 minutes. Rinse or peel off mask and smooth on moisturizer.
7. Lunch and Break
Drain a 125g can salmon, spoon over 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice. Serve with lettuce, cucumber and tomato salad; toss in 2 teaspoons low-calorie salad dressing. Follow with tea or coffee. After lunch read or relax. Stay in your bathrobe for the afternoon beauty treatments.
8. Time to Experiment
Sip a glass of fresh grapefruit juice or soda-water laced with lemon juice. Now for your face. Set out your full kit of cosmetics: foundation, blusher, loose powder, eye-shadow, mascara, liner, lip-gloss, tissues, and cotton wool. Take a clipping of a look you have admired in a magazine and experiment until you have achieved the desired effect.
9. Relax then Dress
Put on a full-length shift ready for dinner and cover hair with a scarf tied into a turban. (Your hair is still full of conditioner).
Prepare a Bloody Mary (without the vodka). Mix a few drops of tabasco sauce with ground black pepper into a glass of well-chilled tomato juice. Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and a few drops of angostura bitters.
Set out an assortment of raw vegetables – celery, carrot, radishes, cauliflower, fresh mushrooms. Serve with Cottage Cheese Dip. Press 1 cup cottage cheese through a sieve; add and mix together 1 tablespoon finely chopped chives, 1 teaspoon grated onion, 2 tablespoons chopped parsley, ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
4 oz grilled fish, such as bream or whiting, with lemon; serve with broccoli and green salad. Slice of fresh pawpaw for dessert. Tea or coffee.
12. Bedtime Routine
Cleanse face. Massage the body with body lotion then go to bed. Flip through a magazine. Lights out.
