Incidence of circulating antinuclear antibodies in cancer patients.
A Imran, F Neelam, M Tariq
March 2003, 57(3):113-116
PMID
:14514262
The following study was conducted to know the incidence of antinuclear antibody [ANA] in various types of cancers in different age groups of both sexes. Results revealed that an overall level of ANA in female is higher than males. This study also showed that out of 50 only 20 cancer patients had raised level of ANA. Whereas in control group only one was positive for antinuclear antibody. Of these 20 positive cases, 4 were having very high titer of ANA, 13 showed high titer and 3 samples were moderately high titer of ANA. The high prevalence of autoantibodies found in aged cancer subjects could be attributed to several cellular and humoral immunological aberrations, which occur with the aging process. The results of this study confirm the earlier observation of necrosis of tumour tissue could be an important contributing factor for production of autoantibodies.

Clinical and epidemiological correlation of Leptospirosis among patients attending KMCH, Manipal.
K Jagadishchandra, AG Prathb, SP Rao
March 2003, 57(3):101-104
PMID
:14514258
Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread zoonotic diseases in the world. Infection may range from sub clinical infection to death of the patient. It may also occur endemically in tropical countries, showing seasonal incidences following heavy rainfall. As the diagnosis is difficult due to vague clinical symptoms, laboratory investigations are essential for the confirmation of the disease. This study was undertaken to correlate the clinical findings, occupation and behavioural pattern in seropositive cases of Leptospirosis. A total of 733 patients suspected of Leptospirosis were tested for specific IgM ELISA and clinical findings, occupation and behavioural pattern were noted.

Pattern of skin diseases in an Indian village.
GS Rao, SS Kumar, Sandhya
March 2003, 57(3):108-110
PMID
:14514260
Disease pattern in a given population is generally determined by different ecological factors. Thus the objective of our study was to find out the pattern of skin diseases in a given population. Analysis of 3673 patients attending a medical camp at Kumble in Kerala state showed 410(11.16%) patients with dermatological problems. 260(63.41%) of them were males and 150(36.59%) females with a male to female ratio of 1.7:1. Of these patients, 178(43.41%) had cutaneous infections and 234(57.07%) had non-infectious dermatoses. Few patients had more than one dermatoses. Fungal infection was the commonest infection seen (22.92%) and eczemas took an upper hand in non-infectious group (32.19%). Improvement in the standard of living, education of the general public, improvement in the environmental sanitation and good nutritious food may help us to bring down the skin disease in this area.

Plasma lipoperoxides : a preliminary reference range.
S Kharb, Veena Singh Ghalaut
March 2003, 57(3):105-107
PMID
:14514259
We measured lipoperoxides, as malonaldehyde (MDA) by thiobarbituric acid reaction in serum from 80 male and 120 female volunteers to establish reliable reference values and to compare possible sex- and age- related differences. In the present study women had higher MDA concentration in serum than do men (p<0.05) and older subjects had higher values (p<0.05). These age related results support the suggestions that lipid peroxidation increases with increasing age.
