Cryptococcal meningitis in AIDS. |
p. 593 |
Revathi S Iyer, DD Banker PMID:14514241A study was carried out to determine the incidence of Cryptococcus species in AIDS patients and their susceptibility pattern to the different antifungal drugs used for therapy. PCR as a rapid diagnostic tool for cryptococcal meningitis was evaluated. All the isolates were senstive to the three antifungal drugs tested indicating that the development of drug resistance is not a major problem in the treatment of cryptococcosis. All the culture positive specimens were positive by PCR which can be evolved into a very useful, rapid diagnostic tool to detect cryptococci in clinical specimens. |

Role of socio-economic factors and cytology in cervical erosion in reproductive age group women. |
p. 598 |
RN Kulkarni, PM Durge PMID:14514242A cross-sectional study involving 357 females in the reproductive age group (15-44) was conducted in an urban community of Nagpur with the objective of studying the role of socio-economic factors & cytology in cervical erosion. Cervical erosion was detected in 82 (22.96%) females. Out of these mild dysplasia was seen in 9.75% females & moderate dysplasia in 2.43% females. High percentages of inflammatory smears i.e. (75.68%) were obtained in women with cervical erosion. Cervical erosion was more common in illiterate & women with low literacy status as compared to women with higher education. Majority of cases of cervical erosion (75.6%) were detected in women with high parity. A statistically significant association was found between lower socio-economic status, early age at marriage & ocurrence of cervical erosion (p<0.001 & p<0.01 respectively). The study concludes that socio-economic factors such as illiteracy and low literacy status, lower socio-economic status, early age at marriage and high parity are contributory for the occurrence of cervical erosion and regular cytological screening by Pap smear will help in early detection of carcinoma cervix and thereby reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by the same. |

Social support in treatment-seeking heroin-dependent and alcohol dependent patients. |
p. 602 |
S Malhotra, A Dhawan, B Prakash PMID:14514243Social support is being recognized as a positive influence on health. It may influence motivation, treatment compliance and outcome in drug dependent patients. On the basis of clinical impression, it was hypothesized that social support in heroin (illicit drug) dependent patients is poorer than in alcohol dependent patients. The current study was undertaken to assess and compare the social support amongst treatment seeking alcohol dependent patients and heroin dependent patients. Despite lesser proportion of patients with any legal source of income in the heroin dependent subject group, the mean social support score across the two study groups was comparable. Overall, the mean social support scores were low in both the groups. The study provides some undestanding about the perceived social support amongst treatment seeking drug dependent individuals from India and also indicates the need to address the issue of social support in substance users. |

Effect of body posture on dynamic lung functions in young non-obese Indian subjects. |
p. 607 |
A Talwar, S Sood, J Sethi PMID:14514244Flow volume loop and its various indices can be used to diagnose UAO. Change in posture from sitting to horizontal position per se causes a decrease in effort dependent inspiratory and expiratory flow rates but no significant change in upper airway obstruction indices. Thus, measurement of FVL in supine posture may be used to detect UAO as it may be missed if spirometry is performed in sitting posture. |
