The prevalence of hypomagnesemia was studied in neonates and children. The specimens were selected randomly from those submitted to the clinical chemical laboratory for blood test. A serum magnesium concentration less than 0.74 mmol/L was considered hypomagnesemic. A total serum magnesium determinations of 910 patients showed that 188 (21.7% prevalence rate) patients contained low serum magnesium levels. Frequently encountered hypomagnesemia was found among neonates with clinical conditions as diarrhea 41 (21.8%), premature births 24 (12.8%), neonatal hepatitis 20 (10.6%) and respiratory distress syndrome 5 (2.7%). In children the clinical conditions most frequently encountered with low serum magnesium were seizure 30 (16%), renal disease 26 (13.8%), metabolic acidosis 18 (9.6%), ideopathic apnea 14 (7.4%) and tachycardia 10 (5.3%). The statistical analysis of low serum magnesium values of patients in various clinical groups showed a significant difference (p < 0.0001) upon using homogeneity of variances but this was insignificant with the application of Kruskal-Wallis 1-Way ANOVA since Chi-square = 12.5748.

Between 1993 and 1996, we carried out a serological screening for differentially identifying HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections among the high risk group persons admitted in the various wards of BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai, using the ImmunoComb kit. This study indicates that although HIV-1 is the predominant virus prevalent in Mumbai, dual HIV-1-2 and HIV-2 infections are gradually increasing.

A total of 406 post-operative clean wounds were studied for the presence of sepsis and antibiogram of organisms were established. The over all post-operative sepsis rate was 13% (clinical) and 12% (bacteriological). Staphylococcus aureus (32%) and Pseudomonas species (21%) were the commonest organisms recovered and Netilmycin, Cephaloridine and Norfloxacin were the most effective antibiotics against both Gram positive and negative infections. This study reflects the change in pattern of infecting bacterial flora in case of post operative wound infections and its antibiogram.

Present study was carried out at child guidance clinic of Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Delhi. Sample consisted of 300 children (175 boys and 125 girls of aged 2-12 years) from November, 1994 to October, 1996. Diagnoses were made by using ICD-10 criteria. The major diagnoses were mental retardation (20.6%), epilepsy (20%), hysterical conversion reaction (6.3%), ADHD (5%) and childhood depression (6%).
